Bedside Table Dimensions: How to Choose the Perfect One

misure comodini

When it comes to furnishing the bedroom, one of the most important elements to consider is the bedside tables and, of course, their dimensions. The height of the bedside table, in particular, is crucial to ensure comfortable use without having to leave the bed.

In this article, we’ll reveal all the tricks from interior designers to understand what dimensions bedside tables should have and how to match them with the bed and the dresser, creating a modern and functional decor.

Bedside Table Dimensions: Let’s Discover Them Together

Let’s start by saying that there is no standard size for bedside tables, universally suitable for all bedrooms.

The measurements of bedside tables vary from 35 to 50 cm in width, from 25 to 45 cm in depth, and up to 70 cm in height. The latter is quite relative because a suspended bedside table can be mounted at the height that is most comfortable for us in relation to the bed height.

When choosing bedside tables, you must absolutely consider the size of the other furniture in the room and the surrounding space, in particular:

  • Consider the size of the bed, especially its height. Remember: bedside tables should not be taller than the bed, otherwise they would be really uncomfortable and impractical;
  • Bedside tables must fit perfectly in your room, so consider the dimensions of the room itself and do not choose too bulky nightstands if space is limited.

What Height Should Bedside Tables Be Compared to the Bed?

The perfect height for a bedside table is the same height as the mattress. This way, everything on the bedside table is easily reachable. Don’t worry, you won’t have to rack your brains to align it perfectly with the mattress, if it’s a little higher or lower, it’ll be fine, as long as everything is within reach!

It’s important to maintain proportion between the bed and the bedside table. If your bed is very low, then the bedside table should be low accordingly; likewise, if you have a very high bed, such as a canopy bed, the height of the bedside table should follow the bed’s physiology.

Standard Bedside Table Measurements

As already mentioned, there is no true standard measurement for a bedside table, and on the market, you can find every type of solution.

We can say, however, that most classic bedside tables resting on the floor and with 2 drawers, measure approximately 45-50 cm in width by 40 cm in height, with a depth of 30-40 cm. These measurements are suitable for most beds and bedrooms.

However, if you have limited space or a bed of particular dimensions, you may need to look for bedside tables with custom dimensions or alternatives, such as suspended bedside tables or bedside tables with integrated power outlets.

Our Martino bedside table, equipped with 3 support shelves and a minimal design, can be considered a standard bedside table since its measurements make it perfect for most bedrooms.

How to Match Bedside Tables with the Bed

Bedside tables and the bed are an inseparable couple, a bit like the caterpillar and the apple. There are no bedside tables without a bed and vice versa! But how to match them together to create a fantastic pair?

To match bedside tables with the bed, it’s important to consider both functionality and aesthetics. Let’s start with functionality. The dimensions of the bedside tables depend on the size of the bed and the room, as well as the space available between the bed and the wall. Aesthetic rules suggest that bedside tables should not be too large compared to the bed and should not be taller than the bed itself.

As for style, a modern design bedside table gives the entire bedroom a striking look. You could even choose different bedside tables from each other, but remember to maintain at least a color consistency between them and the palette in the room.

You could even opt to use something as a bedside table that isn’t really a bedside table!
For example, our Emma side table can also be used next to the bed as

a bedside table, thanks to its height of 40 cm and its top of 45×25 cm, it can also function perfectly as a nightstand.

Another interesting option, perfect for saving space in smaller bedrooms, is to use a floating bedside table. Suspended bedside tables are fixed to the wall, freeing up floor space and creating a light and airy look in the room.

An alternative idea is to use shelves as if they were suspended bedside tables. In this case, take a look at our dedicated article and discover all the tricks on how to install shelves in the bedroom.

Height of Suspended Bedside Table from Floor

The ideal height for a suspended bedside table also depends on the bed’s height and personal preference. In general, the suspended bedside table should be positioned at a height that allows easy access to the items placed on it.

A suspended bedside table should be mounted at a height from the floor of about 50 cm, which corresponds to the average height of most beds on the market.

How to Match Bedside Tables with the Dresser

Do bedside tables have to be matched with the dresser? The answer is no!

Of course, bedside tables and dressers can be matched together, by choosing furniture that belongs to the same design line or that has the same finish. This is really a great way to create visual harmony in the room and a sense of continuity between the various furnishings of the bedroom.

However, in recent years, trends in the world of interior design have changed, and different materials and finishes are preferred for bedroom furnishings. For example, you could match white bedside tables with a gray cement or oak dresser depending on the type of flooring and the rest of the furniture.

Dresser Dimensions

The size of the dresser depends on the space you have available in the bedroom.

The majority of dressers measure in width from 120 to 150 cm, in height about 80 cm, and in depth approximately 50 cm.

If you have limited space in the room, you could opt for a highboy, a type of dresser that is taller and narrower. Highboy widths typically range around 90 cm, allowing you to save precious space without sacrificing the storage space you need for linens and blankets.

As we’ve seen, choosing the bedside table that best fits the room is essential for creating a comfortable and functional environment in the bedroom.

It’s important to consider the dimensions of the bedside tables, the available space, and the overall aesthetics of the decor. Matching bedside tables with the bed, dresser, or other items can add interest and personality to the room.

Experimenting with alternative solutions, such as suspended bedside tables or items like shelves or side tables, can create a unique and original decor.
