How to decorate the entrance of your home for Christmas

christmas hallway decorations

Some people live it carefree, some people wait for it all year round, some people never know what gifts to buy, but like every year in December, Christmas has arrived!

As early as the end of November in the streets and squares we begin to feel the Christmas atmosphere that is echoed in the coziness of our homes, and as per tradition on December 8th, the whole family gathers to decorate the house for Christmas.
The first impact with the Christmas atmosphere in any home, however, takes place before entering: the lights, the wreath on the front door, the decorated windows. Decorating the hallway of the house for Christmas is essential to get us into the warm atmosphere of the holidays as soon as we open the front door.

But then how should you decorate the entrance of your home for Christmas? Let’s discover together all the current trends and ideas to make your home so Christmassy that even Santa Claus will be envious.

How to make a Christmas wreath to decorate the front door

The entrance of the house welcomes and communicates from the very beginning what mood we will find inside. So before you even think about decorating the inside of your home, think about decorating the outside.

Every year the Christmas wreath is the must-have for Christmas outdoors. You can find ready-made ones at any home improvement store or florist store, but you can also choose the DIY option. Let’s see together how to make a Christmas wreath to decorate your front door in a few easy steps.

First, you will need to make a circular-shaped base, and to do this we recommend cutting a piece of styrofoam or cardboard into a circle. You can also weave in vine shoots or other plants if you prefer to achieve a more “rustic” effect.
Once you have the base, all you have to do is glue some pine or holly sprigs, bows, Christmas baubles and pine cones with hot glue. Add a sprinkle of spray snow to the mix and your Christmas wreath is ready to hang on the door.

Be sure to respect traditional Christmas colours: red, gold and green are the most classic and will never go out of fashion, but you can also combine white with gold or red to achieve a more minimal effect that is just as elegant and beautiful to look at.

How to attach a wreath to the door

You’ve finished making your Christmas wreath and now you’re wondering how to attach it to the door, right?

There are several ways to attach the wreath to the door and decorate the entrance of your home for Christmas, let’s see some of them.

You could hammer a very small nail into the door, but in doing so you would leave an indelible mark; a simpler solution might be to use an adhesive hook, but the hold of the hook will depend on the weight of your Christmas wreath.
You could also insert a hook on the inside of the door facing backwards to which you can attach your garland using a ribbon which will instead be visible on the outside of the door.

If your front door is made of glass, you could use suction cups attached to the inside of the door to which you could tie the wreath with a ribbon.

As you have seen, there are a number of tricks for decorating the entrance to your home with a Christmas wreath, and there are also special hooks on the market that can be attached to the front door, so all you have to do is choose the one that best suits your needs.

How to decorate windows for Christmas

Decorating windows for Christmas
can be done mainly in two ways: using static stickers or with stencils.

Glass stickers are very easy to use and are nothing more than stickers specially made to be applied on windows. You will find these stickers in all kinds of patterns, from snowflakes to Christmas trees. In short, you can just effortlessly apply your favourite decorations and remove them at the end of the holidays.

A slightly more elaborate way to decorate windows at the entrance or facing the street is the stencil. There’s nothing difficult about applying a stencil, but you should know that at the end of the holidays removing the paint from the window glass will be a little more complicated than removing a glass sticker. Again, you will find lots of different stencils on the market, and you can even make them yourself.

Decorating furniture at the entrance for Christmas

Now that we have seen how to create a Christmas mood even before opening the front door, let’s move on to the next step: how to decorate the entrance of the house for Christmas once we have actually entered the house.

Often the entrance is a sometimes overlooked gateway, so why not give it new life by decorating it festively?
For example, you could place a small nativity scene or a small Christmas tree with lights on your console at the entrance, or even a beautiful Christmas star to follow tradition.

If, on the other hand, you have not yet furnished your home entrance with a practical entrance console table, perhaps it is time to give yourself a fantastic Christmas present.
With an extending console table in your entrance area, in addition to having a handy piece of furniture where you can place a tidy tray and your Christmas decorations, you will have an extra ally for the festive season. In fact, our extendable tables open up to 3 metres in length and can seat up to 13 people. This year at Christmas you can invite everyone, but really everyone!

Another way to decorate your home entrance for Christmas is to hang a beautiful garland full of lights and colourful balls all around the door. This way, every time you come home, it will be a bit like crossing the threshold into your own personal Christmas world.

You could also use lanterns with scented candles inside them. Lanterns can be placed on the floor, but they would look even better on top of our Emma sideboard, which is also perfect for decorating the entrance to your home. In this way, the warm, soft light of the lantern flame would really create a… magical atmosphere!

Decorating the entrance to your home with a Christmas tree

Who says there has to be only one Christmas tree in the house? If your entrance hall is spacious enough, place a Christmas tree in a corner.

The size of the Christmas tree to be placed in the entrance hall depends on the space you have available. Our advice is to choose a small Christmas tree to decorate the entrance; if the size is exaggerated, the functionality of the room will be lost.

It is crucial to match the style and colours of the tree decorations with all the others in the entrance hall! Otherwise, you will only get something visually confusing without being able to create that Christmas atmosphere you so much dream of.

If you have more than one Christmas tree in your home, match the decorations and colours with each other, even if they are placed in different rooms. In other words, if you used white and gold to decorate the tree in the entrance hall, you should also use the same colours for the rest of the house. You will have to create a sort of themed path that starts in the entrance hall and then spreads throughout the house.

Decorating the entrance to your home for Christmas with lights

No one imagines Christmas without presents, but neither without lights!
If our goal is to decorate the entrance of the house for Christmas, we must equip ourselves with strings of lights long enough to cover the perimeter of the front door.

To decorate the outside of the door, however, make sure that the lights are specially designed for outdoors and therefore also resistant to rain and humidity.

Our advice is to use a white light. Choose a cool white if you intend to give the room a minimalist tone and if you have chosen to decorate the house with cool-coloured decorations, e.g. white and blue. A warm white light, on the other hand, is perfect to match the traditional colours and will warm up the whole house with that Christmas atmosphere we are looking for.

If you have a free-standing coat rack at the entrance to your home, you might consider using it as a light stand. Similarly, if you have a wall-mounted coat stand such as our Rachele coat stand, you could run a small string of lights between the hooks, creating a truly evocative atmosphere.
